PHOTOGRAPHER | PRODUCER | ARTIST
Joel Devereux is a Brisbane-based photographer and producer. A painter from a young age, he discovered his passion for photography after graduating with a Bachelor of Creative Industries (Entertainment Industries major, and Visual Art minor) from The Queensland University of Technology in 2013.
In early 2015, Joel launched his first solo exhibition and book, HYDRA, at Brisbane Powerhouse. Inspired by a dark, alternative vision of isolated masculinity, HYDRA was on display from the 3rd to the 22nd of February 2015 as part of the first MELT Queer Arts Festival. His second major extended series, ‘#FOODP*RN' launched as a book and exhibition as part of the third annual MELT Queer Arts festival. Joel launched his first digital magazine series, DVRX in 2017, which saw a follow up after releasing 100 volumes, JD-RAW, in 2019. Known for his unique style of creative portraiture in the entertainment industry, a number of Australian icons and international celebrities have stepped in front of his camera. Joel's work has been exhibited across Australia and appeared in online and print material all over the world.
As a producer, Joel has been curating burlesque events around Australia since 2013, most notably 'Vanguard Burlesque' alongside Lillian Lace. 'Rumble', Joel's first solo production launched in 2018 to years of success, being involved with events such as Fringe World in Perth, and Wonderland Festival at Brisbane Powerhouse. 'Rumble' is currently hosted by The Outpost Bar in Fortitude Valley each month. In 2019, Joel Devereux and Ruby Slippers co-produced 'I Love Gay', a salute to the most fabulous flag of them all, at Brisbane Powerhouse as part of MELT 2019. Joel has featured as a live makeup artist as part of Ruby Slippers' 'Get Ready' series multiple times in Melbourne and Brisbane. Joel produced 'SHOWGUYS' to sold out crowds at Brisbane Powerhouse in 2021, a gender-bent tribute to Showgirls (1995). Aside from creative portraiture, Joel is an avid event and party photographer, often combining his passion for alternative makeup and photography skill to be a featured photographer at events around Australia.
Joel is currently freelancing full time, as a photographer and producer in Brisbane, Australia, and his rates can be found here.
